How to share a gondola in Venice with strangers

Updated October 10, 2026

Gondolas are priced per boat for up to 5 passengers, so sharing is normal. Team up with people at the stand, post or join a boat on GondolaShare, or buy a shared ticket online for about €30–40 per person.

Option 1: team up at the stand

Stands like Bacino Orseolo always have couples and solo travellers hesitating over the price. Ask if they'd like to share. It works, but it depends on luck and on being comfortable asking.

Option 2: post or join a boat

On GondolaShare you post a stand, a time and how many seats you need, or join a boat someone else posted. Contacts are only visible inside the group, and you all pay the gondolier together at the official rate.

Option 3: buy a shared ticket

Tour platforms sell single seats on shared gondolas for roughly €30–40 per person. You lose control over who you ride with and where you sit, but you gain a fixed time slot.

Good habits when sharing

A few rules keep it smooth:

  • Meet at the stand itself, a few minutes early.
  • Agree on route, duration and total price with the gondolier before boarding.
  • Split the fare on the spot, in cash or by instant transfer. Never prepay a stranger.
  • Respect weight distribution: the gondolier may ask you to swap seats.

Rather book ahead?

Shared gondola tickets sell by the seat online, usually around €30–40 per person.

Questions

How many people fit in a gondola?

Up to 5 passengers on a standard ride; in the evening some operators limit it to 4.

Is it awkward to share with strangers?

Less than you'd think: most people are travellers in the same situation, and 30 minutes goes fast.
