Best time for a gondola ride in Venice

Updated October 12, 2026

The best time for a gondola ride in Venice is early morning (from 9:00 to 10:00) for quiet canals or around sunset for golden light. The official day rate is €90 per boat for 30 minutes from 09:00 to 19:00, and the night rate from 19:00 to 04:00 is €110 for 35 minutes (City of Venice tariff).

Early morning: quiet and cheap

The official day rate starts at 9:00, and between 9:00 and 10:00 the canals are calm, the light is soft and the queues at the stands are short. You are charged the day rate, €90 for the boat, so it is the best value for a photogenic ride, and gondoliers have more time to chat.

Sunset: the most romantic, and most in demand

Golden hour is when most couples want to go, so stands near the Grand Canal and San Marco can be busy. If your ride starts before 19:00 you pay the day rate, even if the light is lovely. Starting after 19:00 means the evening rate.

In summer sunset is late (after 20:30), so you will pay the evening rate. In winter sunset can be around 16:30, so you keep the day price.

Night price and atmosphere

After 19:00 the regulated rate goes up to €110 per boat for a 35-minute tour. Canals are quieter and lit, but the smaller side canals can be dark, so choose a route you feel comfortable with.

Season: when Venice is best

April to June and September to October bring mild weather and long days but also big crowds. July and August are hot and busy. November to March is quiet, often misty and cheaper to organise, though some days of acqua alta or rain can disrupt rides.

Routes and what to expect

A standard day ride lasts 30 minutes (35 at night, give or take a few minutes with traffic and tide) for up to five passengers. Most routes wind through small canals near the stand, with a short stretch on the Grand Canal. Agree the price, route and duration before stepping aboard, and note that a singer or a longer route is extra.

The rate is per boat, so with five people the day rate is €18 each. Any other duration is priced in proportion to time. Sharing a gondola with others is a good way to cut the cost.

Rather book ahead?

Shared gondola tickets sell by the seat online, usually around €30–40 per person.
